Default If Nintendo tanks...

If nintendo tanks from the lack of mature games and ability to become a multimedia experience like the xbox or ps2, I see nintendo as one day getting like Sega and eventually die.

With that theory out there here is a fun question (painful to think about but fun.)

Mario and Zelda are game staples, EVERYONE grew up with them and love the iconic creations. Which company would you rather see Mario and Zelda be sold to? sony or microsoft? forget that new phantom thing, it will die super fast like a panasonic 3do.

I would say sony, I just hate microsoft, once linux supports tons of games the XP will be long gone.

thats just the thing. they will never die. by "lack of mature games" you must mean "complete control over that section of the market." Nintendo has more games geared towards younger kids, so it won't die out.

Don't forget the giant group of people that will continue to buy nintendo products even when they hardly play console games anymore. Its all about devotion to your system!

Yeah... I'm a Nintendo fanboy.

also think of the market for people who grew up with them buying the same for their own kids

people keep having them you know

as for linux destroying ms forget it as they wont be supporting the tons of stuff the linux fanboz dream of

With a profit of almost $1 billion last year, I think this thread has absolutely no purpose!

It has long-term purpose. If Ninty continues to lose market share, they won't stay profittable forever.

Then again, by that time, Sony and MS may have both left the game industry.

Left the game industry? You must be joking. It's far too lucrative for ANYONE to leave.

As for Nintendo...I, too, own a Gamecube for the classics. I don't own any other console, and I very rarely play my GC, but when I do, I play it constantly.

Maybe we're just getting older? I remeber when i was 8 years old how i wanted a Nintendo. Now i don't like it very much anymore(beside for oldschool RPG on SNES) but every younger children who don't have it today probably dream about Nintendo every night.

Most of the Nintendo's games have always been a bit childish. So now we're probably just too old for it and need more mature games. Even tho i still like The Legend of Zelda

thats exactly right. we all like nintendo because of their awesome first party games. sony has a couple of good first party games and microsoft has maybe one. that is why nintendo will never die. people throw all of their money into mario, zelda, donkey kong, pokemon, metroid, etc... there is no way that nintendo will die with games like that.

Nintendo has a stable niche that they have dug themselves into. They make games that parents buy for thier kids. So unless everyone stops having kids, that niche will still be there, and I dont think MS is going to start devoting their money to kids games when they have franchises like Halo, or Sony with Final Fantasy or Gran Tourismo. They have their stable niches, and nintendo has thier's, and Nintendos is just as stable as MS or sony's.

If it tanks, I bet it uses a sword, like Link. But it's probably a caster at heart...

Be serious, that 1 billion was in the hand-held industry. I saw eb-games selling gamecubes for 40 dollars pre-used and still could not sell them out. Nintendo may not be a dying breed in hand-held, (who knows with PSP) but in the console wars you can not deny that they are way behind in the race.

I don't think Nintendo will tank. Sure, they can't entice the third party manufacturers that Sony and Microsoft fight over, but they are smart and have targetted a different customer that Sony and Microsoft games don't usually target. Most games made for PS2 and XBox are Teen and up. Most of Nintendo's games are for all ages.

And with well known titles (like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid for example), even older gamers go crazy over these games. Nintendo is in a better position when compared to Sega's situation which led to them dropping their console division.

Still, IMO, PC games are greater than console games because they offer alot more and tend to have tremendous replay value.

exactly, and the PSP is to early to tell. but from initaial reactions all my friends who have both say they will not tough the game boy again.

and congrats to the first person to reply who answered the question i posed! lol. this was a what if thread, ho wld you prefer to see these icons go to if nintendo ever died out. I only say that since every article i read said how nintendo lost money on the console and the new one visually looks un-pleasing. I cant say on specs cause we wont know that for sure till release since for marketing sake they will claim to one-up and revolutionize gaming.

As for linux, it could happen if enough switch when major companies find they can save 100.00 per new machine for an OS and get linux for free, that adds up.Dell will start selling systems with linux and windows, you pick! Microsoft wanted to sue China for switching to linux for its goverment systems while they were under a deal with MS to use windows.
I would not threaten a country with a suit hom has the largest army in the world! LOL!

It will take alot to get rid of a prominent console system such as nintendo (i mean some ppl still refer to the genre as a whole as nintendo sumtimes). I wouldn't be surprised if they made some kind of comeback, but I have to agree with you it is very possible this will be the last generation of nintendo considering the lack of game contracts (for some reason they insist on using their G rated games, whihc is cute and shows good morals but not good for makin money give us some hardcore GTA)

Nintendo is a very smart corporation though. Start losing market shares, then just cut ties with your expensive labels. Pick a select demographic market and peg it. Keep your brand familiarity up. With family oriented games like Mario (in it's 80 billionth incantation), Wario, Zelda, Metroid, and the rest, PLUS what is still the dominating handheld system, they won't be going away any time soon. They will just trim the fat, get leaner and meaner, and prepare for a comeback.

Wanna play a REAL game?

They've slowed the release of a lot of their originally staple games, for the game cube at least, significantly. Still no Zelda, although it is on its way, no Mario platformer since Super Mario Sunshine, Donkey Konga: Jungle Beat is kinda weird >.> Pokemon was a short-lived fad. Got Leaf-Green out of nostalgia factor, but doubt anything past that is entering my hands. I haven't even beaten the first gym in Leaf-Green, and I've had the game since a month or so after the release.

And where's the side-scrolling Kirby platformer? Last one out was for a handheld, and the last one on a console was for the N64 quite a while.

So many Mario Parties though, and other little novelty games. The original Donkey Conga, Kirby's Air Ride, Mario Tennis, these titles that just cash in on the original characters.

Well, the generation that grew up on the original characters won't last forever.

As for handhelds, the SP was the same price as the Game Cube when it came out, and the DS is even more expensive. Gaming as a hobby for children was expensive enough as it were, now it's starting to get rediculous. And it was bad enough for children to leave a classic gameboy + game in their pants pockets and run them through the washer... I wonder what happens when a DS goes through that? >.> (Never done it myself, but I remember friends that have. Once, I picked up a friend's Pokemon Yellow he left in the yard overnight when it had rained. Gave it to him, he popped it into the game boy, and click: Turned on and data still there) I've dropped the classic Game Boy so many times I can't count them, and caused the screen to be scratched up over time, and that little thing kept on going. If children haven't changed much, I can't imagine how long the handhelds of today last through that abuse. (And my old gameboy from all that abuse works mostly to this day. Sometimes, the screen misaligns and goes entirely black, and you have to smack it to get it to fix, which causes it to reset as well though.)
I am not ready to believe those systems are just as durable as the ones of olden days.

Of course, things we used to play when we were children, and the feasability for next generation hand-helds as children's hobbies are entirely unrelated. ^^

Nah.

Big N makes no loss from hardware.

Plus they make 2x profit on their games compared to other publishers (like EA, etc). Even without their handheld they would still be profitable (but yes, in a much more precarious position).

And Pokemon a fad? Whaaaa! Other than Mario, no gaming franchise has ever sold more games. Pokemon, while no the blockbuster insane fad that it was here in North America, is still quite alive and kicking.

So you think Nintendo is more like an off-tank? Maybe MS could be the controller and Sony could be the blaster?

We'd still need a real tank and a full-time healer.
